GTUYTP STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2022 (IYD)

As we observe IYD 2022, we must also challenge Government to prioritize the development of young people in the teaching profession. This should include but not be limited to providing scholarships for them to develop themselves academically, reviewing policies to ensure deserving young teachers are promoted to different cadres in the Establishment as well as improving their socioeconomic welfare through incentives and allowances that commensurate the very challenging conditions they perform their duties.

GTU TRAINS EDUCATION STUDENTS ON SERVICE RULES

The Gambia Teachers’ Union recently trains Thirty-One Education Students of the University of The Gambia on service rule.

The training focuses on providing the teachers with the requisite knowledge and information on some policy regulations guiding the operation of the public service of The Gambia.

To promote effective service delivery, check conduct of employees, dispense public service efficiently, the public sector of the country has guiding policy documents. These documents outline the expected conduct of public/civil servants amongst other regulations and regulatory requirements.

These service regulations include the General Orders, Personnel Procedure Manual, Code of Professional Ethics and Conducts, amongst others.

The training, therefore, exposes the ‘teachers’ to the regulations as may be required of them and as may apply to them in their line of duty as teachers.

Gambian teachers are members of the public/civil service. They constitute about 40% of the government’s workforce.
