GTUYTP STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2022 (IYD)

As we observe IYD 2022, we must also challenge Government to prioritize the development of young people in the teaching profession. This should include but not be limited to providing scholarships for them to develop themselves academically, reviewing policies to ensure deserving young teachers are promoted to different cadres in the Establishment as well as improving their socioeconomic welfare through incentives and allowances that commensurate the very challenging conditions they perform their duties.

GTU OBSERVES WORLD TEACHERS DAY 2022

The Gambia Teachers’ Union on Wednesday October 5, 2022, joins the rest of the world to observe World Teachers Day.

WTD 2022 CELEBRANTS

The day set aside by the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO, seeks to celebrate the efforts of teachers as well bring to light their plight.

The theme for this year is “Transformation of Education Begins with Teachers”.

In observance of the day, the GTU rolls out regional commemorations in the seven education regions in the country.

GS-Antoinette Corr

Delivering her statement to mark the day, the General Secretary GTU, Marie Antoinette Corr, celebrates the strides of Gambian teachers. She calls for more investment in education including renumerating teachers accordingly.

“We are not begging, we are asking for what belongs to us”, she said.

President-Ismaila S. Ceesay

The President of the Union, Ismaila S. Ceesay, equally calls on government to prioritize teachers’ welfare. He says the theme for the year is apt as indeed transformation of education cannot be realistic in the absence of teachers.
