GTUYTP STATEMENT ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2022 (IYD)

As we observe IYD 2022, we must also challenge Government to prioritize the development of young people in the teaching profession. This should include but not be limited to providing scholarships for them to develop themselves academically, reviewing policies to ensure deserving young teachers are promoted to different cadres in the Establishment as well as improving their socioeconomic welfare through incentives and allowances that commensurate the very challenging conditions they perform their duties.

GTU HOSTS BOOK DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

gambia teachers’ union hosts book development initiative

The Gambia Teachers’ Union is playing host to a book development initiative powered by the Pan-African Teacher Centre-PATC. The initiative is meant to produce culturally relevant supplementary reading materials for lower basic schools in less privileged communities. Twenty teachers drawn from various schools are participating in this important exercise. The book development process will last ten days, 24th May- 4th June 2021.

In her welcoming statement to mark the official opening ceremony, the General Secretary of GTU, Madam Antoinette Corr, said the book development initiative started two years ago but was delayed by the outbreak of COVID. She thus thanked partners for the initiative.

The President of the GTU, Ismaila Ceesay, said the initiative is meant to improve reading skills in schools. He also highlighted the significance of the initiative in portraying our cultural dynamics. He advised participants to be original.

Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, the Education International’s Regional Director for Africa, said the project seeks to address the lack of culturally relevant materials in schools. He emphasized the significance of involving teachers in this process, saying teachers are not passive implementers of the curriculum but agents of change.

Other speakers included the PS-MoBSE, Louise Moses Mendy, Director NCAC, Hassoum Ceesay, Director CRED, Momodou Jeng. They all praised the exercise and the expected results in the advancing the reading culture in schools.
